Designed by EYRC Architects, the Beverly Hills House is located on a deep, narrow, one-acre hillside property. The owners sought to create a private oasis focused on introspection rather than maximizing views or showcasing the home to the neighborhood. The hillside site presented significant technical challenges, such as setbacks and maximum building envelope restrictions.

Design Solution

The design solution involved organizing the house and compound as a long, attenuated experience that provides a sense of graciousness and space despite the restrictions. A small, light-filled structure doubling as a project studio and guest house anchors the north end of the site. In between, a pool courtyard and gardens occupy the heart of the property.

Layout and Structure

The main house, developed on two levels along the north-south axis, houses most of the program. The motor court and garage anchor the south end, containing private areas such as the media room and gym. The entry sequence creates a sense of retreating into a private realm, separating guests from the hustle of Los Angeles.

Living Spaces

Guests arrive at the main level through an entry foyer leading to the primary living spaces. Moving north, the spaces become more public, culminating in the open dining and living area. North-facing floor-to-ceiling glass and sliding doors open to the pool, courtyard, and lush landscape views, blending indoor and outdoor living.

Upper Level

The upper level contains the master suite, which projects over the courtyard, a guest room for grandchildren, a gym, and an additional guest room. A gracious architectural stair at the core of the house connects the levels, enhancing the sense of flow and cohesion within the home.

Conclusion

The Beverly Hills House by EYRC Architects masterfully blends privacy, introspection, and functionality. Its thoughtful design overcomes the site’s challenges, creating a serene oasis that offers both seclusion and connection to nature.
