After purchasing a modest ranch house on a secluded corner lot in suburban San Mateo, the clients loved its unassuming charm, privacy, and lush, native landscaping. Since the client—Head of Sustainable Design for Google Hardware—understands the design process well, she collaborated closely with Feldman Architecture on a renovation that preserves the best of the existing home while creating updated indoor spaces that flow naturally into inviting outdoor living and dining areas.
Inviting Natural Light and Open Spaces
First, the design team reconfigured the dark, cramped entry and central hallway to invite natural light into the home’s core. They expanded the entry toward the street and installed a large window at the hallway’s end. Consequently, visitors now receive a warm welcome as light and dramatic views of majestic oaks greet them upon arrival. Moreover, by cutting through the existing roof trusses, the designers lifted the hallway ceiling and added asymmetrical skylights. As a result, shifting light creates a dynamic architectural spine that illuminates the surrounding spaces throughout the day.
Unifying Indoor and Outdoor Living
Next, the renovation unifies the previously segmented kitchen, dining, and living areas. The team added sliding doors that open onto the rear deck, thus creating a seamless, uninterrupted indoor/outdoor living space. In addition, the restored wood ceiling in the living room now accompanies clean white walls, which visually tie together the custom wood kitchen cabinets and the sculptural wood screen that gently demarcates the living room from the entryway. Furthermore, the refreshed primary suite now spills onto a new wrap-around deck that frames stunning views of oak tree canopies.
A Modern Exterior That Respects Its Roots
Meanwhile, updated cladding and roofing give the exterior a sleek, modern feel while maintaining the home’s classic low‑slung ranch profile. In the rear yard, concrete walls define two distinct, layered outdoor living spaces. This design not only emphasizes the new modern aesthetic but also adds structure to the overall site experience. In the front yard, low concrete walls and carefully chosen plantings create privacy from the street while complementing the crisp, modern architectural interventions.
Ultimately, Viewridge Residence reflects a thoughtful blend of nature and modern design. By preserving cherished elements and incorporating innovative features, the renovation transforms the home into a bright, inviting sanctuary that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces while honoring its original character.
