Designed by Clemens Kirsch Architecture, Villa Minimale is a remarkable allotment house situated in the scenic hills of Vienna. This compact yet highly efficient retreat balances functionality and design inspiration, offering an ideal space for a family of four to relax, socialize, and garden. Moreover, despite strict building regulations limiting the footprint to 35 m² and the height to 5 meters, the project maximizes spatial efficiency and comfort.

A Design Inspired by Architectural Icons

The Villa Minimale draws inspiration from two iconic architectural works: the Villa Rotonda by Andrea Palladio in Vicenza, Italy, and the Kings Road House by R. M. Schindler in Los Angeles, USA. Consequently, this unique fusion results in a design that feels both classical and modern, blending symmetry with innovative spatial solutions.

An Ingenious Layout

The ground floor features a central dining area surrounded by a kitchen, bathroom, WC, and a cozy alcove. On the upper floor, three bunk beds evoke a “camping” experience, complete with views of the starry sky through a central oculus.

Additionally, the structure comprises four identical wooden boxes arranged in a windmill pattern, with shed roofs oriented to optimize light and ventilation. Furthermore, the central oculus acts as a circular air space, connecting the interior spaces and enhancing the sense of openness.

Materiality and Construction

The Villa Minimale employs prefabricated timber construction for precision and sustainability. The exterior is clad in light-glazed timber battens, complemented by a copper roof. Inside, veneered marine pine blockboards create a warm and natural atmosphere, enhancing the sense of coziness and simplicity. Moreover, the materials reflect a careful balance between durability and aesthetic appeal.

Seamless Connection with Nature

A defining feature of the Villa Minimale is its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. Large openings and the strategic arrangement of the structure allow the landscape to flow through the building, providing views in all four directions. Consequently, this connection between inside and outside creates a tranquil and immersive environment that enhances the overall living experience.

A Compact Haven

Ultimately, Villa Minimale demonstrates how thoughtful design can overcome spatial limitations to create a functional and inspiring retreat. By blending classical inspiration with modern techniques, Clemens Kirsch Architecture has crafted a home that is both efficient and elegant, offering a serene escape in the heart of nature.
