Situated in the heart of Northern California Wine Country, this stunning addition to the landscape comes from the renowned San Francisco architectural firm, Malcolm Davis Architecture (MDa), showcasing how modern design can coexist seamlessly with nature. Dubbed the Wine Country Barn, this distinctive structure emerged from a fruitful partnership between MDa and dedicated clients aiming to elevate their weekend retreat.
The homeowners initially considered expanding their main residence for enhanced communal spaces during weekends with family and friends. However, evolving visions led to the development of a separate entertainment barn and guest house. Drawing inspiration from the area’s traditional barns, MDa infused contemporary elements to ensure the new building complements its environment.
To seamlessly blend the new structure into the existing estate, MDa collaborated with landscape design experts, Lucas & Lucas. Their joint efforts focused on integrating the barn, which houses a guest suite, covered parking, and an outdoor kitchen and living area, into the verdant setting. The outcome is a cohesive wine country retreat where the main house, pool, and new barn converge, framed by meticulous landscaping and intentional sight lines.
MDa’s design embraced locally sourced redwood siding, honoring the area’s rich milling heritage. The integration of timber, forms, and volumes echoes the local architectural language and effortlessly melds with the scenic backdrop. Prioritizing sustainability, the team employed passive design strategies, emphasizing natural elements for comfort while reducing mechanical and electrical interventions. This eco-conscious approach ensures the barn aligns with the region’s climate, enhancing energy efficiency. Grant Gibson Interior Design meticulously curated the interior, echoing the timeless aesthetic.
This project marks the second collaboration between the design-savvy homeowners and MDa, having previously crafted their San Francisco home. In contrast to their urban dwelling, the Wine Country Barn provides a refreshing escape, allowing them to reconnect with nature, enjoying the area’s tranquility and warm rural ambiance.
