The 8th of May Square Mansards project by Tisem breathes new life into a historic 19th-century building located at the top of 8 de Maio Square in Figueira da Foz. This rehabilitation transforms the attic of the three-story building into functional living spaces while preserving its patrimonial value and architectural integrity.

Integrating Heritage with Modern Functionality

Situated in the old town and facing the river, the building enjoys a privileged position. Its symmetrical elevations, rectangular plan, and three-pitched roof define its classical charm. However, issues in the roof and attic provided an opportunity to optimize the top floor’s layout, enhancing its usability and value.

Moreover, the project team aimed to preserve the historic space, improve safety, and optimize comfort. They prioritized views of the square and river, rebuilt the roof with Marseille tiles and hidden gutters, and stabilized the structure to extend its lifespan. Additionally, they used the new structure’s geometry and materials as a design theme for the interior, integrating it seamlessly with the existing architecture.

Maximizing Space and Natural Light

The redesign incorporates mansard windows with zinc-coated frames, aligned with the lower floors. These additions bring in natural light and fresh air. Furthermore, the team reinforced and rebuilt the top level’s wooden floor to match the original hardwood, maintaining continuity with the building’s heritage.

In addition, access to the mansard floor was reimagined with a new staircase and elevator. The floor plan divides into two apartments:

  • Two-Room Apartment: Includes an open-plan living room and kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom, and storage space. The living room faces south, offering views of the square and river.
  • Three-Room Apartment: Adds an extra bedroom and a larger living area with space for a kitchen island.

All rooms receive natural light through well-placed windows. As a result, the living areas face south, while bedrooms are oriented east or west, ensuring balance and functionality.

A Modern Aesthetic Rooted in Tradition

The interior design draws inspiration from the roof’s structural grid, creating a rhythm that defines the space. Natural light reflects off white finishes, amplifying openness. Meanwhile, warm wood on floors and ceilings adds texture and comfort. The design feels harmonious, inviting, and connected to the building’s history.

The architecture reflects continuity and evolution, respecting the past while embracing modernity. Instead of replicating or overshadowing the original, the new design enhances the building’s story, adding a contemporary chapter.

Bridging History and Modern Living

The 8th of May Square Mansards project shows how thoughtful design transforms historic structures into functional, modern spaces. By balancing preservation with innovation, Tisem creates a living environment that honors the building’s past while meeting the needs of its future occupants.
