Transforming the Roof Space

The Attic Home, designed by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects, is a transformative renovation project that reimagines the roof space of an Arts and Crafts-era house. This extensive renovation focuses on adding a modern master suite while preserving the charm of the original architecture. The Attic Home stands as a perfect example of blending contemporary design elements with the timeless features of a historic home, particularly through the addition of new structural details.

Design Concept: The New Master Suite

Madeleine Blanchfield Architects completely rebuilt the roof structure of the Attic House to create the new master suite, with exposed collar ties and windows that offer stunning views of Gordons Bay. The redesign introduces a light and sculptural staircase that contrasts with the heavier, more detailed style of the original house. This modern addition complements rather than detracts from the historical architecture, maintaining the integrity of the Attic Home while adding fresh design elements.

A Blend of Old and New Living Spaces

In contrast to the Arts and Crafts-era rooms, the Attic Home also included the creation of a new living area with large glass doors and dark plaster reveals, allowing ample natural light to flood the space. The use of contemporary materials contrasts with the home’s original heavy detailing, creating a dynamic visual experience. The architects cleverly introduced a series of aligned openings throughout the old house, visually connecting the new and old spaces and framing views of the nearby water in the Attic House.

Conclusion: A Perfectly Harmonious Redesign

The Attic Home by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects showcases a thoughtful approach to modernizing a historic home. The seamless fusion of contemporary and traditional architectural elements makes this project a standout example of how old and new styles can complement each other. Through meticulous design, the architects have created a master suite and new living spaces that enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the Attic Home while preserving its original charm.
