Brickyard Residence by dSPACE Studio is an urban home that blends contemporary design with a deep connection to nature. The clients, who are passionate about modern architecture, wanted a sheltered retreat that still offers walkable access to the best of city living. They envisioned open-plan living, smooth integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, room for extended family, and a lounge with skyline views.
Distinctive Design and Materials
A standout feature is a perforated brick screen wall that provides privacy from the busy street while allowing natural light to filter through. Moreover, a custom brick element, tapered on one side, creates beautiful shadows and a sense of movement as the sun shifts across the sky. This innovative use of brick transforms a traditionally hard material into a luxurious texture. In addition, glass and exposed steel contrast artfully with the brick, evoking a modern industrial aesthetic that also nods to Chicago’s rich urban history.
Thoughtful Layout and Sustainable Features
The structure is carefully scaled to respect the surrounding neighborhood. Its L-shaped footprint defines an open-plan sanctuary that shelters a yard designed for the enjoyment of the entire family. The layout promotes a natural flow between rooms while creating intimate corners for relaxation and socializing. Moreover, passive solar design improves energy efficiency and enhances occupant well-being by connecting residents with the outdoors.
Sustainability is a key focus of Brickyard Residence. A PV solar array with battery storage and a green roof help lower energy consumption and reduce the home’s environmental impact. These features ensure that the residence not only looks modern but also performs efficiently in an urban setting.

Brickyard Residence pays tribute to Chicago’s urban legacy by using materials that relate to the city’s history. The thoughtful mix of brick, glass, and steel creates a balance between tradition and innovation. The outdoor areas, framed by cantilevered decks and landscaped with native plants, offer a peaceful retreat amid the urban bustle.
