Flinders House is a family home designed by Geoff Challis of Venn Architects.
Description by Venn Architects: Set on a sweeping hill in coastal Victoria, this house demonstrates how harmoniously architecture can sit within its surroundings. The sculptured contours of the roof bring the house to life, seeming to sail over the landscape, while its low, horizontal profile minimise the statement it makes on the stunning scenery.
The house is generous in its space, designed to accommodate an extended family on holidays. Internally the highlight of the house is the curved, timber lined ceiling which reflects the curve of the surrounding hills.
The landscape is also referenced in the rammed earth wall which spans its length, giving natural simplicity, solidity and texture to an otherwise minimalist space. Throughout materials and fittings are natural & minimal, reflecting the tone of the landscape, with the occasional quirky touch, like door handles made from iron nails to hint at the rural setting.
The hero of this house is the landscape, the sea, the sky which surround it, which can be viewed from every room, every angle. It’s a place for a family to come together and celebrate. A beautiful house in beautiful surroundings. Photos by Derek Swalwell. Visit Venn Architects
