Perched on a peninsula in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the Gaxiola House celebrates 360° lake views with a bold yet refined design. By blending beige concrete, travertine cladding, and a dramatic central staircase, Ezequiel Farca Studio created a home that feels both sculptural and deeply connected to its natural setting.
Spiraling Staircase as Heart and Anchor
Firstly, the designers placed a cast-concrete spiral staircase at the center of the three-level plan. Consequently, this sculptural form binds the basement garage, main living and dining areas, and upstairs bedrooms into one continuous experience. Moreover, the ceiling above the staircase channels James Turrell’s floating skyscapes: during daylight, indirect natural light makes the opening seem to hover, while after dark, artful artificial illumination turns it into a luminous focal point.
Open Plan for Indoor–Outdoor Flow
Furthermore, Gaxiola House embraces entertaining with ease. The living and dining zones slide open to connect with a pool deck, sunken firepit seating, and a pergola-sheltered outdoor kitchen. As a result, guests move seamlessly between interior comfort and fresh air. Meanwhile, strategic placement of bedrooms ensures that every waking moment includes a view of shimmering water or lush landscape.
Geometric Harmony and Material Warmth
Inspired by Louis Kahn’s love of geometric purity, the architects combined a square floorplate with a circular staircase to achieve balance and simplicity. In addition, travertine panels warm the concrete facades, reflecting sunlight and harmonizing with the lakeside palette. Thus, the house feels both solid and luminous, inviting residents to pause and savor the changing light.
Ultimately, Gaxiola House offers a soulful retreat where form, light, and nature converge. By marrying bold geometry with breathtaking views, it stands as a testament to contemporary lakeside living—an elegant canvas for family life and memorable gatherings.
