Habitat on Juers is a social housing project that consists of sixteen adaptable and accessible units. Designed to offer both independence and community, the residences maintain the low-density visual appeal of freestanding homes while introducing the benefits of communal living and shared gardens. The project provides a sense of autonomy typically associated with private houses while fostering a connected and dignified lifestyle.
A Learning-Based Approach to Social Housing
As one of twenty social housing demonstration projects led by the Queensland Government, Habitat on Juers serves as a case study for future developments. By embracing a “learning-by-doing” methodology, the project explores how innovative design can influence systemic change and contribute to new guidelines for social housing. More than just a collection of homes, it is a model for progressive living, supporting local work opportunities and enabling residents to age in place with comfort and security.
Integrating Density Without Disrupting Community
Habitat on Juers challenges common misconceptions about higher-density housing by demonstrating how thoughtful design can blend seamlessly into an existing neighborhood. The architectural approach gradually steps from single-story terrace houses at the street edge to two-story residences at the rear of the site. This transition respects the surrounding built environment while maximizing privacy for residents. The result is a development that integrates naturally into its surroundings without compromising community character.
Balancing Privacy and Connection
A key feature of the design is the ability for residents to choose between social engagement and solitude. Clusters of homes connect through a central green space that serves as the heart of the community, offering shared amenities and opportunities for interaction. Each unit overlooks the garden, ensuring both a sense of connection and a layer of security through natural surveillance. This biophilic approach enhances well-being by incorporating greenery into everyday living.
A Model for Sustainable and Inclusive Living
Habitat on Juers redefines social and affordable housing in Australia by pushing the boundaries of typical housing typologies. Built on an efficient budget, the project still upholds high standards of accessibility, sustainability, and livability. More than just a housing development, it creates an environment where residents can live, work, and play with pride. Through smart design and a commitment to community well-being, Habitat on Juers sets a new benchmark for inclusive and forward-thinking housing solutions.
