Margarido Residence by Medium Plenty is a 4,500-square-foot home in the Oakland Hills that underwent a complete architectural and interior design transformation. Originally built after the 1991 fire, the Mediterranean-style house suffered from a floorplan filled with narrow hallways, excessive stairs, and limited windows. Over time, additions made it even more fragmented. The remodel aimed to restore elegance, openness, and functionality while preserving Mediterranean tradition with a modern sensibility.
Design Strategy and Floorplan Transformation
The new owners wanted a home that was both family-friendly and ideal for entertaining. Medium Plenty reworked the layout by shifting walls and stairs to maximize openness and flow. This improved circulation throughout the house, eliminating the feel of a boarding house and creating larger, more connected living spaces.
Expansive new windows now open the home to extraordinary views of the Oakland Hills, San Francisco Bay, and the city. Natural light pours into the interiors, enhancing the sense of space and connection to the surrounding landscape.
Interior Design and Layering Concept
The interior design of Margarido Residence was guided by the principle of layering. Rich colors, modulating textures, and contrasting materials were combined to create an atmosphere that is both vibrant and refined.
Materials such as millwork, paint, wallpaper, drapery, mirrors, cement, Glamourstone, and glazed terra cotta tile were used in harmony to deliver depth and visual excitement. Each layer contributes to a dynamic interior environment where tradition and contemporary design intersect.
Mediterranean Roots with Modern Touches
While the remodel introduced modern elements, Medium Plenty ensured that Mediterranean influences remained present. The balance between tradition and modernity results in a home that feels timeless yet fresh, honoring its original character while adapting to contemporary family living.
Conclusion
Margarido Residence by Medium Plenty exemplifies how thoughtful remodeling can revitalize a home’s architecture and interiors. By opening the layout, framing the spectacular views, and layering textures and materials, the design team created a lively, family-friendly home that embraces both Mediterranean tradition and modern style. Margarido Residence now stands as a model of transformation in the Oakland Hills.
