Synecdoche is big on community, so when local non-profit Jefferson East, Inc. asked us to build out their Neighborhood Resource Hub in the historic Kresge department store building we were an immediate yes.
As a community hub, JEI needed a space where they could meet daily office needs and host workshops and community engagement events. Flexible office elements and moveable curtains allow the team to transform the space to meet any need. Custom modular furniture–designed and built by our team–including high and low tables, felt pad benches and stackable chairs work together to provide seating, storage, display, and worksurfaces. Multi-functional moveable wall units provide removable storage bins, hanging space for coats, and a dry erase area. The accessible kitchenette provides employee meal space and serves as a hosting area for events.
We set out to design the office to feel open: a place where people could engage with the organization even when just popping in. A reception area provides a friendly face and story. Open desks on the main level provide a drop-in workspace great for visitors, part-time and hybrid employees as well as consultants. At the same time, privacy is important as JEI frequently engages with the community on sensitive issues. A platform workbench separates the common area from a more secure storage area for equipment and files, while meeting rooms and workstations provide acoustic and visual privacy for more private meetings.
In their new office, the JEI team powerfully supports more than 1,000 Detroit residents annually.
