Moggs House by Lachlan Shepherd Architects is a holiday home designed for owners to enjoy more time during retirement. The design follows a practical 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom layout that makes the most of stunning views of a creek, reserve, and ocean corridors.
A Well-Planned Layout
The living areas sit on the first floor to take full advantage of the significant views. The main open-plan kitchen, living, and dining areas work together around a double-height entry void. In addition, a central covered courtyard connects these spaces and offers access to a rooftop terrace with improved ocean views. On the first floor, you also find the main bedroom with an ensuite and a guest powder room. Meanwhile, the ground level features two guest bedrooms, a shared bathroom, and laundry facilities.
Embracing Local Tradition
The building’s form recalls the classic “stilt” houses once common along the Great Ocean Road. A sculptural, oxidised steel blade wall rises from the ground and wraps over the lower cement sheet rooflines. This unique wall shelters the living areas from the street while opening up the interior to the beautiful views outside.
A Space for Relaxation and Connection
The design encourages both privacy and togetherness. For example, the open-plan living area creates a warm, inviting space where family and friends can gather. The central courtyard not only brings natural light deep into the home but also serves as a peaceful retreat. On the rooftop terrace, residents can enjoy quiet moments or entertain guests while taking in expansive ocean vistas. This blend of communal and private spaces makes Moggs House a versatile and welcoming retreat.
Attention to Detail and Craftsmanship
Every element of Moggs House has been carefully considered. The choice of materials and the sculptural steel wall add character while ensuring durability. In addition, the layout and design details echo local architectural traditions, giving the home a strong sense of place. The result is a residence that is both modern in its functionality and respectful of its heritage.
Overall, Moggs House combines practicality with local architectural traditions. It creates a warm and inviting space where every detail serves a purpose and every view can be enjoyed, making it the perfect holiday retreat for retirement.
