Raum Loft by William Tozer Associates reimagines a historic Soho warehouse into a light‑filled, contemporary home that celebrates both its industrial heritage and modern living. Located in the heart of London’s creative district, the 1,200‑square‑foot apartment preserves exposed timber beams, steel columns, brick walls, and original windows — all treated as “found objects” that frame the new intervention.
Open‑Plan Living with Flexible Zones
The design unfolds as a series of timber and white-painted planes that loosely divide the space without enclosing it. At the core sits a sculptural timber kitchen island whose hidden storage and concealed appliances maintain clean sightlines. Beyond, an open living and dining area focuses views on the bustling Soho streets below. Concealed sliding doors transform the secondary living area into a private second bedroom when needed.
Intimate Retreats Within a Loft Volume
Two distinct bedroom suites flank the loft. The master suite, accessed directly from a private lift entry, features a freestanding bathtub set behind a full-height glass screen that blurs the line between bathing and sleeping. Across the hall, a second bathroom doubles as a convenient guest powder room. Both spaces maximize natural light and ventilation, ensuring comfort year‑round.
Celebrating Materiality and Craft
Natural oak floorboards run parallel to the ceiling joists, visually elongating the apartment and drawing the eye toward the street. Subtle texture arises from the interplay of smooth white-painted surfaces against warm timber and raw brick. Custom lighting fixtures either wash the architecture in soft light or serve as sculptural accents, reinforcing the loft’s gallery‑like quality.
A Thoughtful, Human‑Centered Design
Rather than adding square footage, the renovation optimizes the existing footprint for modern life. Every detail — from hidden door hardware to bespoke joinery — reflects a commitment to simplicity, flexibility, and elegance. In doing so, Raum Loft becomes more than a converted warehouse; it transforms into a serene urban sanctuary that feels both timeless and uniquely tailored to its inhabitants.
