Perched on a hilltop in the West Lake Hills with a peek of downtown Austin, the Ridgecrest Residence has been renovated and expanded, doubling its original size. The 5,574-square-foot home takes full advantage of the valley views and promotes seamless indoor and outdoor living experiences while honoring the materials and details of the original 1970s structure.

Design and Architecture

The renovation features extensive glazing along the south walls, bringing in abundant natural light and wrapping around the outdoor living oasis, which includes an existing pool and patio. Floor-to-ceiling windows account for over 40% of the exterior, enhancing the connection between the indoors and outdoors. The open-concept living, dining, and kitchen areas flow directly to the outdoor lounge, creating an ideal space for family gatherings and entertaining.

Main House and Casita Connection

The main house connects to an existing casita with a new second-level addition. The master bedroom and bath are tucked just beyond the open tread staircase. Upstairs, the kids’ rooms each have individual balconies offering unique views of the backyard and surrounding hills. The design preserves elements of the original home, such as exposed wood decking, wood beam ceilings, and rock walls, blending them seamlessly with the new construction.

Interior Design

The interiors are warm and inviting, featuring plaster walls and terrazzo flooring that complement the white oak cabinetry. Bedrooms, the office, and the stair atrium all feature white oak flooring. Carefully curated art pieces add pops of color throughout the home. The landscaping softens the exterior, and a carport mimics the pool canopy, integrating the structures with the natural surroundings.

Outdoor Living

The Ridgecrest Residence boasts large expanses of covered patio (1,108 square feet) and open-air exterior space (1,099 square feet), extending the living area and offering various levels of protection from the elements. These outdoor spaces provide additional areas for relaxation and entertainment, enhancing the home’s connection to its stunning natural setting.

Conclusion

The Ridgecrest Residence beautifully blends mid-century modern design with contemporary enhancements, creating a harmonious and inviting home. By respecting the original 1970s structure and thoughtfully integrating new elements, this renovation offers a perfect balance of indoor and outdoor living in the picturesque West Lake Hills.
