Perched on a rolling field outside Toronto, the Stouffville Residence draws inspiration from the historic stone walls once used to divide farmers’ fields. Consequently, the low, monolithic entry wall is punctuated by translucent glass boxes that offer subtle glimpses of the home’s interior. Meanwhile, the south-facing glass volumes cantilever over the land, framing panoramic views and welcoming abundant natural light. Furthermore, the roof appears to float above the stone entry wall, signaling a more dynamic, contemporary form on the home’s opposite side.
Form and Organization
Two main programmatic bars shape the residence. Indeed, the central public axis includes the kitchen, living, and dining areas, which seamlessly extend to a wooden terrace for effortless indoor-outdoor living. Consequently, this fluid configuration enhances a sense of openness while providing ample space for relaxation and gatherings. Adjacent to the entry, a smaller “service” box encloses the mudroom and pantry, thus preserving the minimal aesthetic along the primary living spaces. Moreover, a master suite with an integrated ensuite anchors the main level, while two additional bedrooms reside on the lower floor. As a result, each sleeping area maintains abundant natural light and carefully framed views of the surrounding fields.
Materials and Sustainable Features
Local granite, Canadian cedar, polished concrete, glass, and mahogany define the residence’s understated yet refined palette. Furthermore, the home incorporates a trenched geothermal loop to power its radiant in-floor heating, ensuring comfortable, year-round living. Consequently, this energy-efficient system reduces environmental impact and underscores the design’s commitment to sustainability. Ultimately, Stouffville Residence achieves a harmonious blend of modern architecture and rural charm, gracefully merging with the rolling landscape it inhabits.
