Cospicua Studio Apartment by studio NiCHE. is a sensitive and imaginative transformation of a derelict heritage property in one of Malta’s historic Three Cities. The project reflects the studio’s mission to adapt old structures sustainably while preserving their cultural essence. Designed for the short-let holiday market, the apartment captures the charm of Maltese architecture through a blend of restored materials, local craftsmanship, and contemporary functionality.
Revitalizing Heritage Through Design
For studio NiCHE., the renovation of this Cospicua property was about more than just creating a modern space—it was about reviving history. The team sought to preserve the apartment’s original character while introducing features that appeal to today’s traveler, who values authenticity and comfort in equal measure.
Traditional Maltese elements such as patterned cement tiles, exposed limestone, and locally inspired artwork ground the design in its cultural context. Each material and detail serves a dual purpose: celebrating Malta’s architectural heritage and supporting sustainable restoration practices.
Compact Living with Clever Solutions
The Cospicua Studio Apartment occupies a double-height volume, which allowed the designers to introduce a mezzanine level for the sleeping area. Below it, the kitchen is placed in the area with the least natural light, optimizing space efficiency. To keep the interior open and uncluttered, a custom sofa with built-in storage accommodates guests’ luggage—an essential feature for short stays.
Despite its modest footprint, the apartment offers all the essentials: a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living zone, and a compact bathroom. A minimalist ladder leads to the mezzanine, where vibrant wallpaper adds a splash of personality and texture. This color accent enlivens the space while maintaining its calm, airy feel.
A Refined Play of Color and Light
Color selection plays a crucial role in shaping the ambiance of the Cospicua Studio Apartment. Inspired by the original red and cream Maltese tiles, the palette of light blue and cream enhances brightness and expands the perceived volume of the space. The cream tones mirror the warm hues of the stonework and kitchen tiles, while the light blue adds freshness and contrast.
A subtle color-blocking technique divides the vertical volume: cream on the lower level grounds the space, while light blue above the mezzanine draws the eye upward, amplifying natural light and creating a playful, uplifting atmosphere.
Blending the Old with the New
The final design achieves a harmonious balance between historical preservation and contemporary comfort. Original features—such as the tiled floor and traditional balcony doors—were meticulously restored and highlighted with architectural lighting. Modern interventions were kept understated, allowing the historic fabric to remain the visual focus.
Ultimately, Cospicua Studio Apartment by studio NiCHE. demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge heritage and modernity. The project offers travelers a truly local experience—where every texture, color, and detail tells the story of Malta’s built legacy while providing all the comforts of modern urban living.
