Hudson Concrete House by Koko Architecture + Design sits atop Mount Merino as a serene retreat and art showcase. Inspired by the untouched concrete geo-marker at the peak, this home blends rugged terrain with refined design. Consequently, it becomes both a country escape and an experiential gallery.
Concept and Site Selection
First, KOKO helped choose the perfect Hudson River Valley plot. Although several historic farms were considered, the team honored the single restriction: the concrete geo-marker must remain undisturbed. Next, they placed the interior courtyard at this high point. As a result, the design responds directly to the site’s natural contours.
Courtyard and Material Palette
Then, drawing on Japanese culture, the architects explored the notion of Ma—the mindful space in Zen gardens. Therefore, they left the rocky terrain visible and wrapped the home in exposed concrete. Moreover, the material echoes both the local rustbelt industry and the client’s wish for a relaxed, natural home.
Art Integration and Bridge Connection
Meanwhile, MVVA Landscape Architects sculpted an artificial earthwork that connects to the house via a steel bridge. Young artists, such as Ben Butler, installed site-specific works that emerge from the courtyard stone. Consequently, the home feels like an open-air museum where art and architecture coexist.
Dialogue with the Valley
Interestingly, the Hudson Concrete House faces Frederick Church’s Olana Estate across the valley—another courtyard house housing an eclectic collection. However, KOKO’s design pays homage to that tradition while creating a fresh narrative. Finally, the project honors the rich arts heritage of the Hudson Valley through its bold forms and thoughtful site placement.
Ultimately, every element—from the untouched geo-marker to the flowing concrete walls—reinforces the bond between art, architecture, and landscape. Therefore, Hudson Concrete House stands as a modern courtyard sanctuary for both living and collecting.
