The Stonington Residence, a recently renovated and restored historic house, is sited between 300 feet of waterfront and a large meadow in Stonington, Connecticut. While the house is situated on a small stone ledge, additional rock outcroppings of the landscape help to organize the outdoor spaces, which include a studio and garage, a pool, and patios.
The varied, mostly untouched nature with its alpine flora and breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains make Tschengla, a plateau high above the village of Bürserberg, a very special place.
The Alpes Office has feeling and is environmentally sustainable, as were the villages of the past. Originally the large lot contained some old houses, white pampas grass, native bamboo shrubs, and plants that survived on the ambient conditions with little input from people.
George is sited between a university campus and a burgeoning creative quarter, in a 1950s apartment block of identical studios originally built for nurse’s accommodation. At 28m2, George is yet another iteration in the study of micro apartments epitomized by a return to the fundamentals of dwelling and access to the vibrancy of the city.
This minimalist Spanish duplex is surrounded by five-storey blocks of flats and, consequently, the lack of privacy on the terraces, which would restrict extended use of these, worried the client.
The Horseshoe Bay house is a symbiotic blend of casual lake living with an over-arching aesthetic that is at once vernacular and sophisticated. Rough materials were reinvented and crafted to blend these notions. Site slope was a major factor in the overall design and site plan of the house.
In summary, from the client’s predetermined conventional organization, the Villarroel apartment proposes adding layers of complexity to the interior experience of the house, adding ambiguity to the classic labels of each room, as well as to the way they relate to each other, so that all this will eventually translate into greater spatial richness.
