The approach for the renovation and extension of the Hopetoun Road Residence is to retain the existing structure as an anchoring element, adding a series of pavilions underneath a floating copper roofline that wraps around the original building.
Desai Chia Architecture designed this loft for a photographer who was seeking a serene live-work environment. The Portobello house is contiguous to the land, providing a perception of single-storey house on all floors, while the floors become slabs in suspension, that is, terraces in height.
After the initial ideas, we did a deep reflection between what the Concretus house should be on its own, and what it would be because of the place in which it’s framed, an impressive natural landscape facing the sea with a balcony looking over the Mediterranean.
The starting point is an easily reconciled oxymoron: a dark attic penthouse located in a busy part of Barcelona that desired a much more open and active internal transit. And above all… tons of light.
