Proverbs14 House is a modest addition that transforms a well-lived life. Located in Cammeray on Sydney’s lower north shore, this slender heritage cottage dates back to the 1920s and has been in the client’s family for generations. Over time, the cottage grew worn and in need of modern updates, especially for a single, older woman who worked in healthcare across Australia. She wanted a home that offered good light, a smooth flow between spaces, and a blend of old and new.
Reimagining a Heritage Cottage
The design team carefully reworked the existing structure while keeping its heritage character. They unpicked outdated add-ons and arrangements and preserved the main fabric of the cottage. In the front, where the dwelling faces the street, the team upgraded the sustainable performance and refreshed all surfaces. Because the area is a conservation zone, the street-facing portion could not be heavily altered. Instead, they focused on improving sustainability and interior quality.
Creating Better Circulation and Light
The project improved interior circulation by enhancing the side entry and hallway, which now lets in much more natural light. As a result, the previously enclosed front verandah and two ground-floor bedrooms now feel open and inviting. In contrast, the rear portion was completely reimagined. A new bathroom and a compact, open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space were created. A new staircase with hidden laundry and storage space efficiently connects the reimagined ground floor with a new first-floor addition.
Spaces Designed for Comfort and Connection
On the first floor, a new bedroom suite—with its own bathroom and walk-through wardrobe—emerges as an airy, light-filled retreat. Although small in footprint, these spaces have a big impact, featuring a picture window that overlooks the rear garden and offers extensive views of the nearby Flat Rock Gully tree canopy and leafy suburbs. The design uses warm, dusty green hues and natural timbers, which contrast with polished concrete and fresh white walls. This palette creates an atmosphere of calm and tranquility.
In summary, Proverbs14 House successfully blends heritage and modern design. By improving light, flow, and functionality, the home becomes a resilient, welcoming space that honors its past and looks forward to the future—a fitting haven for a wise, nature-loving woman.
