Located 150 kilometers north of Trondheim, Rones Cabin is a compact retreat that balances simplicity with thoughtful design. Perched on a steep, rugged site with sweeping views of the fjord, the cabin is intentionally modest, offering only the essentials: a place to cook, eat, sleep, and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Adapting to the Landscape
The steep terrain heavily influenced the design approach. To minimize disruption, the architects created a concrete base that adapts to the uneven site. The base incorporates three different levels, each responding to the natural topography. This foundation provides a durable anchor while preserving much of the vegetation and character of the land.
Material Choices and Structure
Above the concrete base rises a striking triangular volume made of cross-laminated timber and wrapped in black roofing felt. Large wooden windows open the structure toward the fjord, framing expansive views while connecting the interiors to the dramatic landscape. Inside, raw concrete walls and polished concrete floors contrast with the warmth of Norwegian pine used for the second story.
Interior Details and Atmosphere
The furnishing, crafted from Norwegian birch, enhances the sense of authenticity and connection to local craft traditions. Outdoors, untreated copper elements such as gutters will naturally patinate over time, adding richness to the material palette. Together, these choices create a protective, sheltering environment defined by a solid concrete back wall and an open glass façade that invites light and views into the heart of the cabin.
A Shelter in Nature
Ultimately, Rones Cabin is more than a small dwelling. It demonstrates how compact architecture can adapt to challenging terrain while offering comfort and beauty. With its careful integration of natural materials and respect for the site, the cabin provides a timeless retreat that embraces both protection and openness.
