The Bar House site is 13 acres of gently sloping land abutting a 500 acre protected forest preserve. Access to sunlight and views informed our strategy to locate the structure at the site’s highest elevation. Two linear volumes are stacked in perpendicular fashion.
La Calma House is placed in a small town near Barcelona. Its plot is located in a forest area with a very steep slope and an abundance of pine, oak and olive trees. A natural park in front of the plot and the low building density of the area enhance the connection of the house with its natural surroundings.
The new 3,900-square-foot Summerhill house utilizes the foundation and side walls of a previous house on site, and occupies the footprint of the original building with only a modest expansion at the rear. The three-storey datum of the neighbouring homes is maintained.
Anchored to a rocky slope and looking out over expansive water views, this house is the expression of the clients’ desire to connect to both the immediate landscape and the view beyond. Stacked boxes that end in large lift-slide doors direct each interior to specific views.
The Mulholland house on the cusp of a fold in the Hollywood Hills identifies the differential complexity of the steep hillside as its functional and formal generator. The stark, rigid appearance enters a dialogue with the landscape, defining itself as a real object through the process of alienating its context.
Located on a compact infill section, the 180-square-metre house is an example of what suburban living in Auckland’s future can be. With smaller sites, the neighbours are physically closer and so issues of privacy and sunlight become even more pertinent.
The impermeability of the wall is softened by an avenue of young trees directing the visitor along the length of the paved footpath, directly into an inner courtyard surrounded by a semi-opaque stretch of wood, the first in a series of internal courtyards that form a key principle in the design of this modern minimalist home.
Casa Cabo de Vila was built on a hilltop in Paredes, a municipality in Portugal’s Porto district. The architects at Spaceworkers conceived the house as a delightful adornment for the lush natural surroundings. This Wales House is a very elegant and thoughtful piece of architecture. It has great conceptual clarity, it is rich with ideas without being over burdened with them. Externally the Wales house has a strong horizontal emphasis.
