Wilgah Residence, designed by DOOD Studio, is a striking and colorful contemporary addition to a heritage home. What was once a closed-off, claustrophobic space has been transformed into an open, bold, and modern family home. This project was designed for a young family who enjoys hosting numerous events and BBQs, requiring a space that could accommodate large gatherings while still feeling intimate when occupied by the family alone. Additionally, connecting the interior with the yard and outdoor spaces was a critical aspect of the design brief.
Innovative Design and Functionality
The addition to Wilgah Residence features a unique green metal shroud with vertical battens, affectionately labeled the “green screen” by the clients. This element serves multiple purposes: it acts as a privacy screen for the adjoining neighbors, provides solar protection from the Northern Sun, and functions as seating that catches the mid-morning sun. The result is a crisp, bold, and contemporary facade that stands out while harmonizing with the existing structure.
Seamless Integration of Old and New
The design of Wilgah Residence skillfully borrows colors, textures, and patterns from the original fabric of the heritage home, reinterpreting them in a contemporary language that complements the entire property. Bold greens in the interiors and a textured stucco render are prominent features, consistently nodding to the home’s original form while infusing it with modern flair.
Interior and Exterior Harmony
The interior of the home is just as impressive as the exterior. The use of bold greens and textured finishes creates a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The design ensures a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for an effortless flow that is perfect for both large gatherings and quiet family moments. The thoughtful integration of the “green screen” not only enhances privacy and comfort but also adds a unique visual element that ties the design together.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Wilgah Residence by DOOD Studio is a masterful example of how contemporary design can transform and enhance a heritage home. By blending bold, modern elements with respectful nods to the original structure, the residence achieves a harmonious balance between old and new. This innovative approach not only meets the needs of a young, dynamic family but also preserves and celebrates the home’s historical significance. The result is a stunning, functional, and inviting space that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of modern living while honoring its heritage roots.
