Lim + Lu, a multidisciplinary design practice based in New York, unveiled their latest project: the complete renovation of the Happy Valley Residence, a 1,200 sq. ft. apartment in Hong Kong.
Redefining Traditional Design
Lim + Lu revamped a traditional three-bedroom apartment in an older residential building in Hong Kong. Their goal was to challenge conventional apartment layouts and room labels, focusing on how people use their homes today and the need for adaptable spaces.
Flexible and Adaptable Living
The concept involved opening up the space while still offering privacy when needed. Lim + Lu used suspended glass and black powder-coated stainless steel sliding doors to create a flexible living environment that suits the modern, transient lifestyle.
Overcoming Traditional Constraints
Before the renovation, the apartment had typical Hong Kong features: a long, narrow corridor without natural light, three separate bedrooms, and clearly defined kitchen and living areas, all in a tired, muted color scheme.
Expanding the Interior
Lim + Lu transformed the apartment to make it more spacious and versatile. They removed and reconfigured walls, creating a more open and flexible layout.
Unifying Living Spaces
The main living area and bedroom connect through warm oak flooring, which blurs the line between public and private spaces. The narrow corridor became a new master bedroom. Lim + Lu turned the bedroom next to the living area into a flexible space with sliding doors and jade green drapery, allowing it to serve as an extension of the living room or an enclosed guest bedroom.
Adding Fresh Life with Color
Lim + Lu chose colors to bring new life to the apartment. The living room and bedroom walls display white paint with black accents for a restful feel. In contrast, the kitchen, study, walk-in closet, and master bathroom feature rich pastels and dark hues, combined with patterned ceramic tiles. These elements create subtle distinctions between spaces while maintaining a cohesive and fluid design.
Lim + Lu’s renovation of the Happy Valley Residence demonstrates how innovative design can turn a traditional apartment into a modern, adaptable home that meets the needs of today’s lifestyle.
