Located in a Brooklyn brownstone, the Nomadic Nest Apartment is a carefully designed home for two NYC Ballet dancers, crafted by Andrew Mikhael Architect. The couple, who initially lived in a one-bedroom unit, bought the next-door studio with no clear plan on how to combine them. They wanted a forever home that captured their love for travel, cooking, and hosting friends and family.

Global Inspiration in Design

The apartment’s design pulls from the couple’s travels around the world. The bathroom walls are coated with Moroccan tadelakt, creating a calm, spa-like feel. Custom light fixtures from Vienna and Sweden add a unique touch, while colors and textures in the living areas nod to a beloved tailor in Barcelona. Every detail in the apartment reminds them of their journeys.

Smart Space Use in a Compact Area

Combining a one-bedroom and a studio into an 850 square foot area was a challenge. Andrew Mikhael Architect smartly rearranged the space to separate public and private areas. The kitchen sits at the center, dividing the space while staying open and functional. This central kitchen also has strong fans to clear out cooking smoke, a big improvement from their old kitchen.

Flexible and Functional Living

The apartment includes clever features for better living and space use. Skylights in the kitchen and main bathroom bring in more light and add a special touch. Large sliding doors turn the living room into a private guest room when needed. The guest bathroom is also a wet room to save space. Walnut floors laid at an angle break up the boxy feel of the rooms, echoing the dancers’ graceful movements.

Working Together on Materials

This project was a close team effort. The clients introduced the architect to Popham concrete tiles, which influenced the apartment’s color scheme. They even helped lay the tiles to make sure they looked just right. Soapstone counters in the kitchen add warmth and match the dark cabinets, chosen after trying out many samples to find the perfect one.

Conclusion

The Nomadic Nest Apartment shows how a home can reflect personal stories and passions. For these dancers, their apartment is more than just a place to live—it’s a blend of their life, travels, and love for the arts, all tied into their everyday space. This home is a proof that thoughtful design can turn a living space into an inspiring, practical, and beautiful environment.
