Cooinda House, designed by Counterpoint Architecture, takes its name from an indigenous word meaning “a happy place.” This contemporary beach house, located on Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville, North Queensland, was created to accommodate a large and enthusiastic extended family. The design thoughtfully fosters togetherness while maintaining a strong connection to the natural beauty of its surroundings.
A Design That Embraces Simplicity and Functionality
The client’s brief called for a large space that could comfortably host extended family gatherings. Counterpoint Architecture distilled this requirement into a straightforward yet effective architectural form that fits seamlessly within the local context of Magnetic Island. The house’s central feature is a double-height “outdoor room,” which serves as the heart of the home. This space connects all other areas of the house, providing a versatile social gathering spot that encourages interaction among family members.
Flexible and Adaptable Living Spaces
One of the key achievements of Cooinda House is its adaptability. The home works just as well for a couple seeking a quiet retreat as it does for large family gatherings. The layout’s flexibility ensures that the space remains functional and inviting, no matter the number of occupants. The central outdoor room plays a crucial role in this adaptability, offering a space that transitions smoothly from intimate to communal settings.
Integration with the Natural Environment
The architectural form and material choices for Cooinda House were selected to integrate well within its Magnetic Island setting. The design respects the island’s natural beauty, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. This connection to nature enhances the aesthetic appeal of the home and creates a serene and welcoming atmosphere for its inhabitants.
In summary, Cooinda House by Counterpoint Architecture successfully balances functionality with environmental harmony. Its ability to cater to both small and large gatherings makes it a versatile and joyful place for its residents, truly reflecting the meaning of its name.
