High Street Flats by Wimshurst Pelleriti transforms two derelict shops in Hampton Wick into a refined, small-scale apartment building. Moreover, this infill project embraces its awkward site conditions, turning constraints into opportunities for inventive design and maximum value.
Context and Vision
First, the site’s history as vacant retail units presented both a challenge and an invitation. Consequently, Wimshurst Pelleriti saw potential where others saw limitations. Furthermore, the building’s scale—small yet perfectly formed—responds sensitively to the High Street’s existing rhythm, creating new homes that feel both distinct and in harmony with their surroundings.
Design Challenges and Solutions
Next, the project navigates a series of unique obstacles: tight boundaries, mixed frontages, and neighboring heritage façades. Therefore, the architects employed precise massing and strategic setbacks to minimize visual bulk. In addition, carefully placed windows and balconies optimize natural light and privacy despite the narrow footprint. As a result, each apartment enjoys generous daylight and well-proportioned living spaces.
