This home is on a typical size Chicago lot, but being adjacent to an alley allows the footprint to be wider than a mid-block “infill” home and takes advantage of the full southern exposure to maximize day lighting. Large southern windows and windows facing the street are mediated by an exterior vertical sunscreen element that adds depth to the facade and screens views of the street and alley.
The Outside Inside House is designed around the Owner’s desire to enjoy year-round outdoor space. The open first floor living and dining spaces expand into the spacious raised rear terrace and generous garage rooftop deck. Similarly, the third floor “tree house” work space pops up in the center of the home and is surrounded by outdoor living areas. Ipe decks and built-in details make a cozy private outdoor spa, shower, and fireplace area in the rear of the home. Bamboo and grasses in built-in planters provide privacy for the front deck that enjoys a large framed opening with views of an enormous mulberry tree.
